T-Shirt / Memory Quilts
Clothing items can hold sentimental value and fond memories of favorite vacations, school sports/clubs, hobbies, causes, and more. Instead of keeping them away out of sight, consider re-purposing them into a useful and precious keepsake that can be given for many occasions like graduation, new baby, wedding gifts, anniversary gift, Christmas, birthday and more. If a loved one has passed away, transforming some of their clothing items into a cozy quilt to wrap up in is a great way to help during the grieving process.
What can be used in a t-shirt/memory quilt?
- T-shirts, dri-fit shirts, dress shirts, pants, robes, sweatshirts, uniforms, work shirts, PJ bottoms, blankets, onesies, ties – essentially anything that can be ironed and sewn.
How many shirts/items do I need for a quilt?
The number of items you need depends on several factors:
- End use of the quilt – do you want a wall hanging, lap quilt, throw blanket, or a bed cover/comforter
- Number of items you have – we can create a quilt you will love with however many items you have. A good throw sized blanket with full squares usually takes roughly 20-25 shirt fronts
- Budget – Each style of quilt and add-on options come at various price points to meet your budget
What do I need to do with my shirts to get them ready?
- Please wash all items before bringing them to us – bring them in a tote, large bag, or garbage sack
- If you are bringing the shirts to us, please do not cut up your items before bringing them to us. We cut each shirt into 13x13” squares but they can be cut larger to accommodate larger shirts or design
- If you are shipping shirts to us, please go through all your shirts and cut up the sides of each shirt on each side leaving the sleeves intact. Ship us only the side of the shirt you want us to use. This should help cut down on your shipping costs.
What if I don’t know what kind of quilt to have made?
- No worries!!! We can go through the items with you and talk through all the options
- We send you pictures of layout recommendations so you have a pretty good idea of what your final quilt will look like before we start sewing
RAGGY STYLE BLANKET
- Shirt squares are layered on fleece, quilted and blocks sewn together with seams facing to the front. The seem edges of shirts are snipped to create a fringe or “raggy” boarder around the squares with the fleece backing showing on the boarders as well.
- This quilt is that can have squares added to it over time as you collect more shirts.
BLOCK QUILT/BLANKET
- Shirt squares are cut and backed with a special stabilizer to keep the shirts flat and square that they can be sewn together. The squares are sewn together right next to each other.
- This quilt can be backed with a fun cotton print or solid cotton with quilt batting between the layers or backed with a no-pill fleece
BORDER QUILT
- Shirt squares are cut and backed with a special stabilizer to keep the shirts flat and square that they can be sewn together. The squares are then stitched to strips of cotton “sashing” to create boarders around each square.
- This quilt can be backed with a fun cotton print or solid cotton with quilt batting between the layers or backed with a no-pill fleece
CRAZY QUILT
- Shirts are cut into a mixture of squares and rectangles focusing in on special parts of each shirt. Each shirt backed with a fusible interfacing and then specially cut with our templates to capture the important parts of your shirt.
- This mixture of shapes comes together to create a truly unique quilt. Instead of being priced per shirt, this quilt is priced based on the final square footage of the quilt.
