Baby Quilt Sizing & Onesie Guide

Our Baby Memory Quilts are designed to preserve your little one’s earliest outfits in a soft, timeless keepsake you’ll treasure for years. For baby quilts, we typically use one onesie or baby clothing item per square, making it easy to plan your quilt based on the items you’ve saved.

The number of onesies needed depends on the finished size you’d like and how you plan to use the quilt — whether as a lovie, crib quilt, or throw.

Baby Quilt Size Guide

(6" Finished Squares – One Onesie Per Square)

Quilt Style Layout Onesies Needed Finished Size
Baby Lovie 2 x 2 4 onesies ~12" x 12"
Crib Quilt / Lap Quilt 6 x 9 54 onesies ~36" x 54"
Throw Blanket 8 x 10 80 onesies ~48" x 60"
Large Throw Blanket 10 x 10 100 onesies ~60" x 60"
Twin Bed Quilt 8 x 15 120 onesies ~54" x 90"

Important Notes for Baby Quilts

  • Most baby quilts use one onesie per square, depending on the size and usable fabric of each item.

  • Items such as sleepers, dresses, blankets, or specialty baby garments may provide more or less usable fabric.

  • These numbers are approximate estimates to help with planning.

  • We will always confirm the final layout and quilt size before assembly begins.

This quilt style is ideal for:

  • Baby clothes and onesies

  • First-year keepsake quilts

  • Nursery or playroom blankets

  • Meaningful baby shower or first birthday gifts

How to Prepare Baby Items for Your Memory Quilt

Preparing your baby’s clothing properly helps us create a beautiful, lasting keepsake that preserves those earliest memories. Please follow the guidelines below before sending your items.

Preparing Your Baby Clothing

  • Most machine-washable baby clothing can be used in your quilt, including onesies, sleepers, dresses, and small outfits.

  • Please wash and fully dry all items before mailing or dropping them off.

  • Avoid sending items that are dirty, wet, or heavily stained, as this may affect the finished quilt.

Please Do Not Cut Your Baby Items

  • We kindly ask that baby items remain uncut.

  • Leaving garments intact allows us to carefully stabilize and cut each piece using specialized templates to ensure the best use of fabric and design.

  • Our process is designed to safely preserve as much of each garment as possible while maintaining a clean, uniform look.

Design Preferences & Special Requests

  • If there are specific outfits you want featured or items you prefer not to be used, please include a note with your shipment.

  • We will thoughtfully select the best sections of each piece to create a soft, cohesive quilt layout.

Caring for Your Baby Memory Quilt

Your baby memory quilt is a handcrafted keepsake made from meaningful clothing and fabrics. With proper care, it can be enjoyed for years while preserving the memories stitched into every square.

Washing Instructions

  • Machine wash gently in cold water.

  • Use a mild, baby-safe detergent.

  • Wash alone or with similar soft items to prevent snagging.

  • Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh detergents.

Drying Instructions

  • Air drying is recommended to help maintain the quilt’s shape and softness.

  • If needed, tumble dry on low heat and remove promptly.

  • Avoid high heat, which may cause shrinking or damage to delicate fabrics.

Everyday Use & Care

  • This quilt is perfect for snuggling, tummy time, and nursery display.

  • While designed to be loved and used, it should not be used as a play mat or left outdoors.

  • Rotate and fold gently to prevent wear in one area.

Storage Tips

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

  • Avoid plastic storage bags; use a breathable cotton bag or pillowcase instead.

  • Refold occasionally to prevent permanent creasing.

A Note About Handmade Quilts

Because each baby quilt is made from unique clothing and fabrics, gentle variations in texture, color, and wear are normal and part of what makes your quilt truly one of a kind.

With thoughtful care, your baby memory quilt will remain a treasured keepsake — preserving the sweetness of these early years for generations to come.
